These cephalopods had eyes, tentacles, and spiral shells. They are more closely related to a living octopus, though the shells resemble that of a nautilus. Ammonites thrived during the Cretaceous period and appeared in the fossil record about 240 million years ago; a massive ocean covered what is now Madagascar - teeming with life. Over time, they passed on, and their shells were fossilized.
