Rutile is an oxide mineral composed of titanium dioxide (TiO2), the most common natural form of TiO2. Most rutilated quartz is formed by hydrothermal processes; as the high temperatures cool and the pressure eases, rutile crystals become trapped inside the quartz crystals.
