What the heck is vermeil anyway? Pronounced VER-MAY, gold vermeil uses Sterling Silver as a base metal, so your jewelry is made from only precious metals! Sterling Silver consists of 92.5% pure silver. A thick layer of gold is then electroplated over the sterling silver base. When making vermeil jewelry, the gold layer is required to be at least 2.5 microns thick and must also carry a karat weight of 10 or above. Regular "gold plated" chains can be less that 0.5 microns and degrade quickly down to a more inexpensive base metal like copper or brass.
